Gallerion Novigrad
Description:
Gallerion, a gallery of permanent exhibitions dedicated to the history of seafaring and naval wars, is located in the maritime town of Novigrad / Cittanovi in Croatian Istria. The exhibition section dedicated to the Austro-Hungarian Imperial and Royal Navy ranks second in size in the world, right after the Navy collection at the Military History Museum in Vienna, and the exhibition continues to grow.
The gallerion was founded by designer and photographer Sergio Gobbo
The Gallerion was founded by designer and photographer Sergio Gobbo, who began collecting the exhibited collection 30 years ago and opened it to the public in its current premises in 2007.
As Sergio Gobbo spent his childhood and youth among fishermen and sailors in Izola, Piran, Savudrija, Vis and other islands sailing with his father or diving wherever he went, and as a designer and photographer he worked for years to promote our Adriatic, so and during his later life he devoted himself to the sea and to the study of life on and along it. When he realized that the maritime museums on the Adriatic did not adequately describe the common maritime history, and in part even systematically suppressed or hid it, he decided to establish the first private maritime collection “Gallerion” in Novigrad / Cittanovi, Istria. The collection was ceremoniously opened on behalf of the European Union and even visited several times by Dr. Otto von Habsburg. Despite the lack of state aid and the boycott of other institutions, the collection today enjoys extraordinary attention, even internationally, as evidenced by numerous foreign visitors. The collection continues to expand thanks to the contributions of those whose history has been silenced so far.
The themes of museum / gallery development are Greeks, Romans, Venice, World War II and the Cold War on the Adriatic.
Gallerion partners
The first partner of “Gallerion” is the Military Museum in Zagreb, and very constructively cooperates with archaeologists from the Ministry of Culture, the Anti-Explosion Department of the Ministry of the Interior – Pula Police, Uljanik Shipyard, museums and collections of similar appearance and concept in Croatia and Slovenia, Austria , The Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy. The ultimate goal of the project is the realization of a large international maritime museum, which would also show the Croatian maritime and naval history and tradition that has always existed, although for a long time developed under other people’s flags.
The current exhibition is divided into two locations, in the Gallerion we exhibit the historical part while in the nearby church of Sv. Mary of Carmel, we are exhibiting a series of photographs of sailors and ships that did not return from the sea in the First War.
